Each piece has its own individual description.
Now known to be a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen and traces of other substances, the ancients believed it to be one of the four elements from which all bodies could be created. One of a set of four weights portraying the Elements - Air, Fire, Earth and Water.
Fire could be described as a substance visible in the form of flame but was believed by the ancients to be one of the four elements from which all bodies could be created. One of a set of four weights portraying the Elements - Air, Fire, Earth and Water.
Earth was believed by the ancients as being one of the four elements. A mixture of these elements in the correct and magical proportions could create any substance or body. One of a set of four weights portraying the Elements - Air, Fire, Earth and Water.
Although now known as the chemical compound of two volumes of hydrogen and one of oxygen, in ancient times water was regarded by philosophers and alchemists as being one of the four elements from which all bodies could be created.
